Time: about ten minutes. Materials: none, or three signs taped to three corners of the room.
Call out a line item or a term and give students about fifteen seconds to point at, or walk to, the correct bucket. Good bucket sets: needs, wants, saving; fixed or variable cost; asset or liability. Keep calling until everyone has moved several times, then run a second round with a harder set, for example needs against wants when an item could plausibly sit in either and the room has to argue it out loud before committing.
Trains: fast classification, which is exactly what a timed multiple choice section rewards and a slower worksheet never drills.
Suits: the opening minutes of any review day, and especially the budgeting unit.
2. The paycheck relay
Time: about twenty minutes. Materials: one blank pay stub outline per team of four and one marker.
Give every team the same hourly rate, hours worked, and a federal withholding percentage to apply, with the calculator's state field left at zero. Student one fills in gross pay. Student two applies the withholding line, then FICA, Social Security and Medicare, as the other deduction named. Student three writes the net pay. Student four writes one sentence naming where the gap between gross and net actually went. Only a complete, correct stub scores, so the sentence matters as much as the arithmetic. 3. Predict the split
Time: about fifteen minutes. Materials: one device per team, or one shared screen and a projector.
Describe a household whose take-home pay and housing cost mean housing already eats more than half of it. Before anyone opens a tool, teams predict whether the standard needs, wants, saving split still works, and if not, which bucket has to shrink. Teams write the prediction down, then open the budget split calculator, raise the needs percentage to match the housing share described, and check what the tool reports for the other two buckets and the leftover line against what the team predicted.
Trains: predicting how a model behaves before verifying it, and reading a breakdown that has to add back up to the whole pay.

4. Beat the payoff line
Time: about fifteen minutes. Materials: one device per team, or one shared screen and a projector.
Open the credit card payoff explorer and point out the line it marks where a fixed payment exactly covers the first month's interest. Assign half the teams the job of clearing the balance well inside that boundary and the other half a payment small enough that the balance barely moves. Teams drag the payment handle to hit their assigned side, then explain in one sentence why the marked line matters more than the payment amount by itself.
Trains: the idea that a payment has to clear the interest charged before any of it touches the balance at all, the part of card payoff a memorised formula usually misses without the picture.

5. The error hunt
Time: about twenty minutes. Materials: one projected or printed graded answer per team, written with three mistakes planted on purpose.
Give teams a worked answer to a personal finance question that looks complete and is wrong in three places. Points for finding each mistake, double points for correctly explaining why it is wrong. Plant errors across categories rather than in one spot: a rent payment labelled variable instead of fixed, a debt-to-income ratio built on take-home pay instead of gross income, or the snowball and avalanche methods swapped.
Trains: recognising a wrong application of a model, harder than producing a correct one from a blank page and closer to catching a mistake in a student's own free response answer.
Suits: any unit, and works best run across the whole course, since the three planted mistakes can each come from a different unit.
6. Two truths and a lie
Time: about fifteen minutes. Materials: none, index cards optional.
Each team is assigned a term, for example credit utilisation or net worth, and writes three statements about it, two true and one false but plausible. Teams swap cards, identify the lie, and state what the corrected sentence should actually say.
Trains: writing the lie is the real work. A convincing false statement about a ratio requires understanding it precisely enough to bend it in one specific place, which produces more thinking per minute than almost any other format here.
Suits: vocabulary heavy units. Insurance, investing basics, and taxes all work well because their terms carry precise definitions that are easy to bend slightly wrong.
7. The sixty second explanation
Time: about ten minutes. Materials: a stack of term cards, one term per card.
A student draws a card and gets one minute to explain the term to the class without using two or three words banned in advance, chosen from inside the definition itself. For credit utilisation, ban 'balance', 'limit', and 'percent'.
Trains: genuine understanding over a memorised definition. A student who can only recite the textbook sentence cannot do this, and it becomes obvious to the room within a few seconds.
Suits: any unit, run as a closer right before whichever game follows it on a review day.
8. The decision jigsaw
Time: about thirty minutes. Materials: one decision cut into four labelled parts per group of four.
Split a full decision into four pieces. For a rent against buy decision built around renting against buying a home: one group works out the buy side monthly cost with the PITI calculator and compares it to the rent given on the card, a second works out what the money tied up in a down payment could otherwise be doing, a third works out how long owning takes to catch up to renting, and a fourth listens to the first three and writes the actual recommendation, naming what fact would flip it. Groups teach their piece to the room in order.
Trains: the fact that a real decision assembles from several separate calculations that depend on each other, the same shape as a free response question whose parts build on one another.
Suits: the consumer decisions unit, or a capstone right before a test covering several units at once. A car lease against buy decision, priced on the car lease calculator, splits the same way.
9. Net worth tug of war
Time: about fifteen minutes. Materials: one device per team, or one shared screen and a projector.
Open the net worth explorer, which holds assets fixed and lets a debt handle slide. Assign each team a target, for example a debt-to-assets share to land on or a net worth reading to hit. Teams drag the handle until the readout matches their target, then explain in one sentence what real change in a household's life a debt level that high or that low would actually represent.
Trains: reasoning backward from an outcome to the input that produces it, the reverse of how the tool is normally used and closer to what a free response question asks when it states a result and asks what must be true for it.
Suits: the saving and net worth unit, or a general review day, since the explorer needs no unit specific setup.
10. Whose ratio wins
Time: about twenty minutes. Materials: two household profiles per team of four, written on cards with income, debts, balances, and limits chosen in advance.
Give each team two households. Teams compute each household's debt-to-income ratio and credit utilisation, decide which household looks stronger on each ratio, and when the two ratios disagree about which is doing better, defend which one should carry more weight and why. Present the verdict to the class for open challenge.
Trains: using a ratio's actual definition and denominator rather than pattern matching a formula, since getting the direction right, income against limit, gross against take-home, is what decides who wins, and defending a judgment when two honest ratios disagree is exactly the reasoning a free response question rewards.
Suits: the credit and debt unit, and pairs well as a capstone alongside the error hunt.
Running a review day
Sequencing. Open with the category speed round and the paycheck relay: fast, low stakes, and they surface who still needs the basics before the harder formats start. Move into the calculator based games, predict the split, beat the payoff line, and net worth tug of war, once the room is warmed up and a team can commit to a prediction with something at stake. Close with the error hunt, the decision jigsaw, or whose ratio wins, since those need the most writing and work best when attention is highest, not last on a tired class.
What to skip near a test. A format that rewards speed on recall alone belongs earlier in a unit, not on a review day where the remaining gains sit in explanation. A relay or a jigsaw where one strong student can carry the whole team defeats the point; the paycheck relay and the decision jigsaw both fix this structurally by handing each student a piece nobody else can finish.
One device problem. Not every room has one device per team. Run the prediction on paper for every team, then call one team at a time to the front to check its prediction on the shared screen while the rest of the room watches and argues.
Do not grade these. The moment a review game carries points, students protect the point instead of producing the honest wrong answer, and the honest wrong answer is the one worth spending class time correcting.
