Effective tax rate calculator

By Jude Wallis

Effective tax rate is total tax divided by income. $8,160 of tax on $60,000 of income is 13.6 percent. It measures the average share of income paid, not the rate on the last band.

The formula

effective rate=total taxincome\text{effective rate}=\frac{\text{total tax}}{\text{income}}

Divide total tax by income and multiply the decimal by 100 to express the effective rate as a percentage.

Average tax across income

$8,160 divided by $60,000 is 0.136, or 13.6 percent. How effective tax rate works explains the average.

A second tax total

$4,560 divided by $40,000 is 0.114, or 11.4 percent. The effective tax rate uses all tax in the numerator.

Effective against marginal

The marginal tax rate applies to the next or last band. Effective rate averages the total tax over all income.

Scope of the rate

This identity uses the total tax and income entered. It does not determine which taxes belong in the numerator for a particular comparison. This is educational material, not financial advice.

Common questions

Is effective rate a marginal rate?

No. It is an average across the income entered.

Does the calculator compute total tax?

This page takes total tax as an input. The tax bracket calculator builds a teaching total.

Is this financial advice?

No. It is educational material for an average tax identity.

This page is educational material, not financial advice. The figures come from the formula shown and assume the inputs you enter hold for the whole term. Your own rate, fees, taxes and timing will differ, so treat the output as arithmetic to check a decision against, not as a recommendation.
